Rise with the sun to pray. Pray alone. Pray often.
The Great Spirit will listen, if you only speak.
Be tolerant of those who are lost on their path.
Ignorance, conceit, anger, jealousy and greed stem
from a lost soul. Pray that they will find guidance.
Search for yourself, by yourself. Do not allow others
to make your path for you. It is your road, and
yours alone. Others may walk it with you,
but no one can walk it for you.
Treat the guests in your home with much consideration.
Serve them the best food, give them the best
bed and treat them with respect and honor.
Do not take what is not yours whether from
a person, a community,the wilderness or from a
culture. It was not earned nor given. It is not yours.
Respect all things that are placed upon
this earth – whether it be people or plant.
Honor other people’s thoughts, wishes and words.
Never interrupt another or mock or rudely mimic them.
Allow each person the right to personal expression.
Never speak of others in a bad way. The negative
energy that you put out into the universe
will multiply when it returns to you.
All persons make mistakes.
And all mistakes can be forgiven.
Bad thoughts cause illness of the mind,
Be truthful at all times. Honesty is the

I can't really remember everything that King has learned.
The latest thing we did was go fishing at a lake. King really enjoyed playing with the worms and he was so excited when we caught a fish.Zero-Waste-Livinghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04921524944911688668noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2293963364047090270.post-81341013005362399902012-03-03T12:00:00.001-05:002017-03-27T20:57:43.552-04:00Learning About DinosaursKing is now really into dinosaurs so we are exploring the subject at his pace. It all started with an episode of Dinosaur Train. We plan on watching Dinosaur Train, Dino Squad, The Land Before Time Series, Walking with Dinosaurs by BBC, a few National Geographic Dino shows, Clash of the Dinosaurs by Discovery Channel, the Disney movie Dinosaur, Power Ranges Dino Thunder, Prehistoric Planet by PBS, Godzilla and of course everyones favorite purple dinosaur Barney.

I will also be using this unit from The Teachers Guide For coloring pages and tracing exercises.

We will be taking a field trip to The American Museum of Natural History to see Fossil Halls. The museums website offers a teachers guide for planning activities before during and after a visit to the museum.

Fossil Halls

One of the premier attractions in New York City is the Museum's series of fossil halls, including its two famed dinosaur halls. The Museum is home to the world's largest collection of vertebrate fossils, totaling nearly one million specimens. More than 600 of these specimens, nearly 85 percent of which are real fossils as opposed to casts, are on view. Completely renovated between 1994 and 1996, the fossil halls now stand as a continuous loop on the fourth floor, telling the story of vertebrate evolution. Unlike most fossil exhibits, which are arranged in chronological order, the Museum's fossil halls display the specimens according to evolutionary relationships, dramatically illustrating the complex branches of the tree of life, in which animals are grouped according to their shared physical characteristics. Such relationships are determined through a method of scientific analysis called cladistics, which the Museum helped pioneer. The halls' renovation also allowed for new scientific interpretations of favorite displays, as well as the restoration of the fourth floor to its original architectural grandeur.Zero-Waste-Livinghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04921524944911688668noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2293963364047090270.post-41101684189830502882012-02-28T01:21:00.009-05:002017-03-27T20:57:43.488-04:00Second trip to Liberty Science CenterOnce again we joined the local homeschool group at the science center. We spent most of the time time in the iexplore area again. King sat quietly and was very interested in the Sub Zero: The States of Matter presentation.

Using super cold liquid nitrogen and common household items, Liberty Science Center educators demonstrate how and why things change from solid to liquid to gas to plasma. Guests will develop a better sense of the physical world around them through this “really cool” exploration of matter.

We made it up to the 3rd floor and got to see the Eat and Be Eaten area.Eat and Be Eaten is designed so little ones can get up close to the animals. Habitat windows are low and shaped so kids can easily discover the fascinating creatures that call Liberty Science Center home.We got to meet this little cutie who was successfully incubated at LSC.
We like to do pouring activities with rice, sand, or water, color mixing with paints or colored water. King has many knobbed puzzles which are great because they make him use the pincer hold. We have a huge Play Dough bin with rolling pins, plastic knives, cookie cutters and different pieces from play doh mold sets. I also recently purchased these dry erase books from Crayola

King loves them and will pick them up and trace the letters or numbers on his own almost daily.

I found this list: From ThePreschoolMama Blog
18 Ways to Teach Your PreSchooler to Write

Here are some ways to get your child practicing his handwriting skills before he finishes preschool. With most of these, you’re aiming to strengthen his fine motor skills – the ones that are responsible for holding and guiding a pencil along a straight line.

Give your child strips of paper and let her cut up into confetti. The strips shouldn’t be too thin or floppy. Make a smiley face on the upper hole where the thumb should go, to teach her how to hold the scissor properly. Start with shorter pieces of paper that she can cut with just one snip. Progress to longer pieces which need two snips of the scissor, and so on. Use blunt ended scissors. After a while, move on to snipping along a line on the paper. Draw squiggly lines, straight lines, circles. Let her cut around a picture. All these scissor cutting activities for preschoolers help control the movement of the scissors as it moves ahead to the next snip, and as it moves ahead to its goal, which is great practice for writing.
Rip newspapers. This may seem like a boring task, but you’d be surprised at how much they enjoy it. Terrific for fine muscular development. Start with random ripping into small bits, then move to ripping on a line that you’ve drawn for her on the paper. For advanced practice, let her rip around a picture. Draw squiggly lines, and let her rip though them.
Part of the problem with writing for most preschoolers comes with holding the pencil correctly. Place a piece of sponge in her palm, and let her close her ring finger and little finger around it. Now, let her use only the thumb, forefinger and middle finger to hold the pencil. Having to hold the piece of sponge with the last two fingers will make her hold the pencil tightly with the first three. Here’s how to do this.
Cut out three holes in a sock, and let her insert her thumb, forefinger and middle finger in each hole before she attempts to practice writing. Again, this helps to reinforce the right way to hold a pencil.
Give her beads, or cheerios, or pasta shapes, and some string to thread.
Use lacing cards, or make some of your own by punching holes in cards – use old greeting cards. Lace a thick string through.
Use thin crayons or chalk pieces for practice for beginners – they are easier to hold.
Let her connect dots on paper. Use lined handwriting paper, and make two dots that will help her make vertical, horizontal and slanting lines. Have many such lines of dots for her to connect. This helps her draw straight lines for alphabet writing.
Practice writing semi circles (like the letter “C” facing both ends). Use dots again to help her get the shape right. This gives practice for making perfect circles and semi circles for alphabets later.
Let her trace the outlines of figures and drawings with crayons.
Work on developing those minute finger muscles. Give her some play dough, and let her make small balls or sausage shapes out of them, using her thumb and forefinger only .
Use tweezers for sorting activities. Let her pick up a bean or a pea with a pair of tweezers, and transfer into another bowl.
Do spooning activities. Allow her to spoon dried beans from one bowl to another using her thumb, forefinger and middle finger to grasp the spoon and transfer the beans.
Practice inserting keys into locks or keyholes.
Take an old shoe box with the lid on, and make a slit on the lid. Practice inserting playing cards into the slit with her writing hand.
Practice writing with her fingers in shaving foam, or in a tub of sand.
Let her draw a picture, and sprinkle glitter inside the figure carefully, taking care to stay inside the lines as much as possible.
Play with rubber bands. Let her wrap rubber bands around plastic bottles or glasses – it strengthens those very important little muscles.Zero-Waste-Livinghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04921524944911688668noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2293963364047090270.post-62750564933307701262012-02-20T16:59:00.000-05:002017-03-27T20:57:43.519-04:00What's Inside My Body?King ask his daddy " What's inside my body?". I want to thank Heather over at This Side Up blog for a wonderful Human Body Unit Resource post. I used all the online video links and will be looking in our local library for the books she suggested. King also liked the Bubble Guppies song about bones. We have been looking at different diagrams of different systems inside the body and just introducing him to the names of different inner body parts. I love that he is so interested in anatomy.

I introduced him to Carl Sagans quote " We're made of star stuff" so now when you ask him what is inside his body he says " stardust" I think it's pretty cute.
He can't really write any yet unless you count a circle as the letter o and a straight line as the letter I. We have been using these toys for a few months now.

Other than that I like to point out signs on the street or in stores and ask him if he knows any of the letters on the signs then I ask him if he knows what sound the letter makes.

King also watches Word World and the Leap Frog Learning Shows on Netflix. Word World is all about letters words and phonics. The Leap Frog Show has different episodes about different learning topics, letters, numbers, patterns, etc. King has learned a so much from both shows.

Kings Mobigo and V-smile games have levels aimed at learning about letter and phonics. All together King gets about 30 minutes of learning his letters everyday.Zero-Waste-Livinghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04921524944911688668noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2293963364047090270.post-45909801080860642292012-02-04T17:57:00.000-05:002017-03-27T20:57:43.496-04:00Trip to Pyramid MountainWe went to the visitors center and walked the childrens trail and maybe .2 of the blue trail. King had a ton of fun. He loved all the displays in the visitors center and we are going to go back once Spring is here.

Located in Kinnelon, New Jersey. Pyramid Mountain Natural Historic Area

Pyramid Mountain Natural Historic AreaEstablished in 1987, after lengthy grassroots efforts to preserve the area from development, the Pyramid Mountain Natural Historic Area is more than 1,500 acres of open space rich in natural and historical resources. Visitors to the park enjoy its environmental, natural, geological, and historical diversity.

Easily visible to hikers are the unusual geological attributes of Pyramid Mountain, such as Tripod Rock, a 160-ton boulder balanced atop three smaller rocks, known as a glacial erratic. The broad mountains, flat-topped ridges, and narrow valleys of Pyramid Mountain are not only beautiful, but also vital in feeding downstream reservoirs, supplying needed aquifers, and supporting flora and fauna.

The wide variety of natural habitats found within Pyramid Mountain include fields, forests, streams and ponds, which support a number of plants considered uncommon to New Jersey as well as threatened and endangered plants and animals. Historically, Pyramid Mountain is important for its lessons about the Lenape Indians, who flourished in this area, and the early European settlers, who came to the area to take advantage of its rich natural resources.Zero-Waste-Livinghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04921524944911688668noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2293963364047090270.post-38222545809420990722012-02-02T13:52:00.000-05:002017-03-27T20:57:43.479-04:00Screen Time and HomeschoolingI know this is an issue that can get heated not only among homeschoolers but parents in general. I have read a dozen articles with a dozen different suggestions and opinions. I wanted to share my opinion on this since I find that the many screens$$ in my home get a lot of attention.

I find no validity to the argument many try to make that TV, Video Games, Computer Games and other screen related activities are bad for kids. Some will argue that it shortens their attention span or once you do not set limits on screen time that is all they will want to do. My son is 3 years old and has never had any kind of screen restrictions. He has been watching TV since birth and has been playing video games since this past October when we got him a Mobigo, he has been playing computer games from different websites since early last summer.

We have Netflix and King loves watching cartoons. He has watched a little bit of everything, any cartoon you can think of he has probably watched at least one episode of it. I can't even begin to name how much he has learned from them. I do admit that cartoons today are much more educational than they were when I was little but they all have something to offer and none should be dismissed. Every episode is a new experience and a new adventure. When it comes to video games we have a PS3 and King has a Mobigo. Mobigo is a handheld video game system by V-tech. The system has educational games for ages 3-8. King loves his Mobigo he won't go anywhere without it and will usually play with it for 20-30 minutes at a time. The fact that something is holding his attention for that long is incredible and proof enough for me that screen time does not shorten attention span.I usually can't get him to pay attention to 1 thing for more than 10-15 minutes yet he can play this game for almost 30 minutes.I have found a lot of websites with educational games for King. Kings favorites are starfall.com and poissonrouge.com. We are learning French from Poissonrouge and King is learning his letters from Starfall. We also love to look for videos of watever King is interested in at the time on Youtube.

King probably accumulates about 3 hours of screen time per day. He is given a choice of what he wants to watch on TV and 9 out of 10 times it is something age appropriate and educational. Even without restrictions he chooses to play most of the day. I can't say things will be like this forever because I know as he gets older things will change and I might find myself saying " turn it off, NOW!" but right now this is working out just find for us.Zero-Waste-Livinghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04921524944911688668noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2293963364047090270.post-670813108776448152012-02-01T01:52:00.000-05:002017-03-27T20:57:43.525-04:00Links Related to Screentime and Homeschooling/UnschoolingFreedom to Learn by Peter Gray
